On the afternoon of June 5th, JD CEO Liu Qiangdong announced via social media that every year large volumes of agricultural products become unmarketable. He strongly urged local governments not to blindly develop fruit industries. Liu Qiangdong stated that data shows that, for most kinds of fruit, supply far exceeds demand. Large volumes of imported fruit have gradually diminished the market share of domestic fruits.
JD stated that every year they assist many kinds of farmers in many areas to overcome the difficulty of unmarketable fruits: JD assisted garlic farmers in Yunnan and Sichuan in April of this year when more than 5000 tons of garlic became unmarketable; JD also organized promotional activities when apple farmers in Gansu were unable to find buyers for their high-quality apples.
